What are the Benefits of Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is perhaps the most commonly known vitamin because of its extensive use as a dietary supplement. This vitamin is extremely important to all the human beings as well as animals. Although the cells of our bodies are capable of producing this vitamin, but owing to the modern lifestyle, we need more than what can be supplied by the body. This vitamin is required for the growth, development and repair of the body tissues. Since our body is not capable of storing vitamin C this is why we need it from the external sources.

Vitamin C helps in the production of collagen. Collagen is a protein which plays an important role in the support of ligaments, tendons and the blood vessels. This protein also helps in the vitality and health of the skin and other vital organs of the body. Vitamin C also helps in the absorption of certain minerals such as iron. Proper dose of vitamin C can thus make our immune system stronger.

Vitamin C is found in abundant quantity in many fruits and vegetables. There is no need to consume the vitamin C supplements if you are regularly consuming the vitamin C rich food items. Citrus fruits are the best source of this vitamin. Make sure to include grapefruit, oranges, kiwi fruit, and other citrus fruits in your diet.

It is advisable to eat the fruits and vegetables fresh and uncooked. If the food item is kept in storage for a long time or is cooked or microwaved it may lose its vitamin C content.
